Mission

The Renal Fellow Network (RFN) is one of the primary educational websites for nephrology fellows. It focuses on peer learning with nephrology fellows authoring content to help nephrology fellows. Many of the stand out medical educators in nephrology contributed to the blog early in their careers. In September 2019, Joel Topf, the founder of Precious Bodily Fluids, thought that RFN could use a monthly recurring feature focusing on electrolyte disorders. He reached out through twitter and set up the Skeleton Key Group (SKG).

The mission is to enhance medical education, writing, and editorial skills through the discussion and publication of electrolyte-based topics. The vision was to have a group of nephrology fellows work on a monthly blog post based on electrolytes in coordination with the RFN. This group of fellows would collaborate in order to find a case, interpret the data, write it up, create supportive visuals and follow-up questions-akin to a virtual “morning report”. Importantly, the blog post would not stand alone but be a part of an educational package that includes animated videos, visual abstracts and tweetorials. Click here to look at the list of all our cases so far on RFN. Check back regularly for a new case every month.

The SKG has become a source of education, collaboration, and camaraderie that highlights the power and versatility of nephrology fellows. Our group chat is like a big fellows room where we constantly discuss ideas for questions and edits to our posts. The SKG now hosts Nephrology Social Medical Collective (NSMC) interns as part of their tweetorial rotations.

We are always looking for ways to enhance our mission and for new members. If you have an idea or a case that you think would make a great post for our series, reach out to any of the staff members listed below on twitter or message us @TheSkeletonKG.
